Secondary Air Systems
Tighter emissions regulations require that today's engines produce less harmful pollutants. On many new engines, additional air must be pumped into the main exhaust stream during rich, cold starting conditions in order to facilitate quick light-off of the catalyst. The typical secondary air system channels air directly into the exhaust manifold via a system of hoses, valves and tubes. In many cases, there may be more than one injection point into the exhaust manifold. The intense heat absorbed by the exhaust manifold causes the manifold to expand a greater amount than the much cooler secondary air tubes. This could lead to premature failure of the air supply tubes. Tubing and the associated fittings in contact with the exhaust manifold must withstand intense heat and a corrosive environment. Senior has developed unique corrugated thin-wall, flexible secondary air tube designs to solve high-temperature durability problems, as well as installation problems. |
